A new world champion has been crowned in diving chess, a hybrid sport that combines swimming and chess as players must hold their breath and dive underwater to play out a game on the bottom of a pool.

Former Dutch Diving Chess Champion Zyon Kollen emerged from the pool as the men’s champion while 17-year-old Josephine Damen, also of the Netherlands, was crowned women’s world champ.

The 2025 Diving Chess World Championships were capped to just 40 competitors who battled not only the wits of their chess opponents, but also the cold water while having to hold their breath as they made their moves underwater.
