On this video the full masterpiece! 'The Overture to Prince Igor'. This is probably one of the best known works of Alexander Borodin, the soundtrack uses the FULL work with a strong visual flavour of Russia's second city.
Alexander Borodin 1833 - 1887 - Russian composer and a native of the city of St. Petersburg, which is the subject of this video.
In 1869 Borodin started work on the overture to an opera which was to be entitled 'Prince Igor'. This appealed to Borodin's national pride.
Borodin was unable to finish the overture before his death in St. Petersburg. It was later completed by the combined musical genius of both Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov.
Borodin was the son of a Russian Prince born and raised in St Petersburg he studied medicine and became a prof of chemistry. Although music was not his main career Borodin ranks among the greats of fine Russian classical composers. His unique melodic and harmonic style are best heard in this work.
