What is the Epiclesis during the Catholic Mass?

The word “epiclesis” is an Ancient Greek term meaning “invocation” or “to call upon.”

The Epiclesis is the part of the Eucharistic prayer when the priest calls upon God the Father to send down the Holy Spirit so that the offerings may become the body and blood of Christ. He also prays that “the faithful by receiving them, may themselves become a living offering to God.”

The bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass. How? Through the power of the Holy Spirit, which transforms the offerings into divine communion.

But the prayer is also for the faithful to enter into communion with God and each other. The Holy Spirit brings about unity among the people.
