It’s controlled by hormones, mainly progesterone, which signals the embryo to stay dormant until the mother’s body decides it’s safe to continue growing.

This survival strategy is not unique to kangaroos—other marsupials, like wallabies and bears, also use embryonic diapause. But in kangaroos, it is especially crucial due to Australia’s unpredictable climate, where droughts can make food scarce for months.
