RAWALPINDI: Former Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Lieutenant General (Retired) Faiz Hameed, has officially filed an appeal against the 14-year rigorous imprisonment sentence awarded by a military court. The appeal challenges the verdict issued by the Field General Court Martial (FGCM) on December 11.

According to his lawyer, Mian Ali Ashfaq, the appeal has been submitted to the relevant military appellate forum, as confirmed in a statement to the international news outlet Arab News. While the legal appeal has been formally filed within the stipulated time, specific details of the appeal remain undisclosed.

Faiz Hameed was found guilty on four serious charges, including revealing official secrets, engaging in political activities, misuse of authority, and causing harm to others. Under the Pakistan Army Act, a convicted officer has 40 days to file an appeal following the sentence. After this period, the case may proceed to the Court of Appeals.

The military appeals process begins with an initial review by a senior officer of the rank of Major General or above. Subsequently, the Army Chief holds the authority to uphold, reduce, or completely annul the sentence. Historical precedents indicate that such appeals can extend over several years, making this a closely watched case.

According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the court martial proceedings against Faiz Hameed began in August 2024 and lasted for approximately 15 months. The military spokesperson also clarified that certain political matters linked to the case are being handled separately.

Notably, ISPR referred to Faiz Hameed as a former Lieutenant General, sparking speculation that he may have been stripped of his rank. However, no official confirmation regarding the removal of rank has been issued so far.
