We took a trip to the Chasewater Railway near Cannock in Staffordshire and booked a compartment in a British Railways mark 1 coach being pulled behind an W.G. Bagnall 0-4-0ST locomotive.

Chasewater is a heritage railway that used to be operated by the National Coal Board and connected to the Midland Railway. After it closed a preservation society leased the line in the 1960s and efforts were made to restored it. The railway struggled in the early 80s, but in 1985 it was revived and is now a very successful tourist attraction.

The railway has an impressive collection of industrial steam and diesel locomotives, a few diesel multiple units and variety of wagons and coaches.

There's plenty to do at Chasewater. The Brownhills West station has a cafe, a handful of shops (including a model shop), a model railway and a museum and heritage centre. Further down the line at Chasewater Heaths there's another cafe and model railway.

The area is beautiful and perfect for walking or biking around.
