Jon Brodie Memorial Lecture: Driving change for the future of the Great Barrier Reef

Dr Jon Brodie was not only a leading researcher but a bold and influential advocate for policy and investment to tackle water quality issues for the Great Barrier Reef. He was a fearless force for change at a time when he perceived that the scale of the problems facing the Reef far outweighed the solutions that were currently in place to tackle them. In this Jon Brodie Memorial Lecture, longtime colleagues reflect on over thirty years of managing risks, growing social license, and driving policy change for the better in the often highly contested Great Barrier Reef space. Co-authors include those who led the charge for rezoning in the Marine Park, engaged in the fishing wars, created the water quality agenda and introduced the impacts of climate change on the Reef to the general public; all in an era of science scepticism. Drawing on their collective experience, the authors analyse successful pathways from science to policy to outcome, different approaches, challenges, and roadblocks, including the need to adapt to new information and new situations. Their conclusions distill what has been learnt about how to drive change to successfully deliver improved outcomes for the Reef.
