POV: You forgot to pay your property taxes in Texas and now you owe $7,600!

I’m really upset at myself for not paying more attention to this.

House ownership comes with a LOT of responsibilities. This is why I don’t knock anyone who says they aren’t ready to own a house. It is very easy to fall into debt and become house poor if you don’t have money put away to handle situations like this. I know they, because I’ve been there.

I didn’t get the initial mail that the property taxes were due until this mail came in with the late notice. I called and they said it was sent but my husband said he didn’t see it and neither did I. I don’t usually check the mail but I’m going to be very diligent about combing through every piece of mail now.

But then again, as a house owner, it is my responsibility to be following up on things like this. Making sure to renew my home owners insurance when it expires, pay my taxes when it’s due and the list goes on. So whether the mail was sent or not, I should have known that the taxes were due and followed up on how to pay it.

I just went back now and put all the information into a spreadsheet and set calendar notifications and reminders for when everything is due and needs to be paid so this doesn’t ever happen again. I’m glad that I have the money to pay this penalty, but this isn’t really what I want to spend my money on.

For those wondering why my tax bill is separate, I purchased this property cash, so it isn’t bundled with a mortgage which is usually the case. It’s also an investment property so I don’t live in it & we have our RV parked out back.
