We began the day exploring the historic Galle Fort, a coastal fortress originally built by the Portuguese in the 1500s, later fortified by the Dutch, and eventually held by the British. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is now home to a vibrant blend of colonial charm, boutique shops, cafes, and cobblestone streets. Next, we boarded a traditional boat to explore the scenic Madu River, a biodiverse wetland ecosystem famous for its mangrove tunnels, Buddhist temple islands, and cinnamon plantations. Ahungalla Turtle Centre 14:46
We continued to the Ahungalla Turtle Hatchery, a vital turtle conservation and rehabilitation center. Here, we learned about their efforts to protect sea turtles from pollution and injury, especially from plastic waste. Holding baby hatchlings and seeing rescued turtles up close was deeply moving. Moragalla Beach, Bentota 18:04
Our evening took us to Moragalla Beach, near Bentota, where we swam in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and watched one of the most breathtaking sunsets of the trip. A perfect way to wind down, accompanied by a friendly beach dog and a beachside dinner at The Palms Resort. Colombo 22:52
On our final full day, we journeyed from Bentota to Colombo, stopping first at the massive Kande Vihara golden Buddha statue. In the capital, we visited Independence Square, a Buddhist temple, a vibrant Hindu temple, and the iconic Red Mosque. We capped off the day with a mouthwatering dinner at Ceylon Curry Club, followed by live music at The Tap House, set in a beautifully restored 1700s Dutch hospital.
