In the heart of Phnom Penh, Cambodia lies Boeung Kak Lake, occupying over 90 hectares.

In 2007, the Phnom Penh Municipality agreed to sell Boeung Kak Lake and a large tract of land surrounding it for US$ 79 million. The buyer is Shukaku, a company backed by Chinese money, with ties to members of the Cambodian parliament

In 2008, Shukaku began filling Boeung Kak Lake with sand, causing massive flooding and the collapse of several houses.

Although the government maintained that the development would benefit the community, over 3000 families living around the lake were evicted from their homes. Today only 700 remain.

Despite their hardship, the community started protesting for their homes and their rights.
