The Journey of

The permanent exhibition brings together small and big stories around the genocide and the exile of the Armenians , through a touching and immersive staging. In 2018, the visit route was renovated. It has been enriched with new interactive multimedia and its content has been completely updated. A contemporary installation by Michka Anceau now guides the visitor on the edge of the exhibition.

A sensitive journey
Designed as a real journey , the exhibition presents more than 2000 archival documents. From the origins of the Armenian people to their exile outside their historic lands, the scenography guides the visitor from the land of origin of the Armenians to the Rhone Valley.

Based on this story, thematic focuses integrated into each of the stages give the exhibition a universal approach . Are thus addressed:

the concept of "genocide",
the phenomena of exile and integration,
issues related to collective memory and identity.
Many media punctuate the visit and give it a sensitive character: films, interactive digital devices, sound testimonials, maps and modules to handle...

Seven sequences to go through
Return prohibited - The visitor follows in the footsteps of an Armenian family who arrived in Valencia after the genocide and is prohibited from returning to the Ottoman Empire. A little further on, he discovers the "objects of exile" emblematic of Armenian identity. Other major diasporas are also mentioned around the world.

Origins - Where do the Armenians come from, what is their history? We discover in this sequence the evolution of the Armenian territories, from Antiquity to the genocide of 1915.
Genocide and exile - Then comes the silence, the desert: that of the disappeared, of the deportees. The documentary Memoirs Wounded , directed by Jean-Michel Vennemani, brings testimonies and archival documents. The question opens up to other genocides of the 20th century .
Why France? - What was the context of the massive arrival of Armenians in France in the 1920s? Through the role played by the League of Nations and Fridtjöf Nansen, statelessness and the history of refugees in the 20th century are discussed here.
Paths of migration - The Armenians in exile arrive in Marseille and go up the Rhone Valley before settling in the Drôme, according to work contracts and individual or family initiatives. This route is reconstructed thanks in particular to documents kept by an Armenian family.
Valence - Many Armenians arrived in Valence and its surroundings in the 1920s. How did they gradually find work, housing, and build a new life outside their country? This question is put into perspective with the reception of other foreign populations in the Drôme and in France.
