In the story of the "Famous People Players," Brooke Adams plays Diane Dupuy, a remarkable woman whose dream becomes a reality when she successfully combines her two interests, the mentally handicapped and puppetry. From initial total chaos and pandemonium, she patiently and lovingly blends the troupe into a coherent and multi-talented theater company. Dressed all in black, using ultraviolet illumination, the group creates some magical and uncanny resemblances of some very 'famous people,' such as Liberace, Elvis Presley, Barbara Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. Sometimes sad, often amusing but always optimistic, this is a film that will help restore one's faith in humanity.

Special People is based on a true story of Diane Dupuy. Diane Dupuy creates a unique black light theater company called Famous People Players. The cast consists of people who are developmentally challenged. Seven members of the cast play themselves in the movie as well as the man who discovered this talented performance group and gave them their start in show business Mr. Showmanship --- Liberace.
