North Korea has staged a mass rally and parade mobilizing hundreds of thousands of its citizens in central Pyongyang to celebrate the end of the congress of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea and honor its absolute monarch.

The four-day congress, the first such gathering in 36 years in the communist state, concluded on Monday after unanimously electing the North's leader Kim Jong-Un as chairman of the ruling party.

He had been the first secretary of the party since April 2012.

North Korea's ceremonial leader Kim Yong-Nam made a speech before Tuesday's parade, reiterating that North Korea is a nuclear state and congratulating the election of Kim Jong-Un who took power in 2011.

On top of the daytime rally and parade, a torch march involving more than 100,000 youths were staged in Pyongyang on Tuesday evening.
