"What Wondrous Love Is This" is an American Folk Hymn often sung on Good Friday with lyrics that center on Jesus’ crucifixion. Because I grew up the son of a Lutheran pastor father and worship music director mother, sung hymns and liturgy were formative for me. I witnessed musicians in church use their craft to build community and evoke spiritual meaning, rich with stories and emotions. This arrangement of “What Wondrous Love Is This” is a fantasy based on the hymn lyrics and draws explicitly on the spiritual roots of the jazz tradition. The group builds toward the liberating proclamation in verse four, “And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on; and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on.”
