The Education & Advocacy Governor's Award for Excellence in Agriculture goes to Dr. Michael Parrella!

Dr. Michael P. Parrella joined the University of Idaho (UI) as Dean of the College of Agricultural & Life Sciences and professor of entomology in February 2016. In his role as CALS Dean, Parrella oversees more than 240 faculty located on campus and throughout the state at nine research and extension centers and University of Idaho Extension offices located in 42 counties and three federally recognized tribes. Prior to his move to Idaho, Parrella served as the Chair of the Department of Entomology at UC Davis and Associate Dean of Agricultural Sciences at UC Davis. Dr. Parrella served six years on the Governing Board of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) and was President in 2018. Among his many accomplishments during his time as Dean of CALS, Parrella created the Sandpoint Organic Agriculture Center, the first and only USDA Certified organic program in the UI CALS. He was instrumental in acquiring the Rinker Rock Creek Ranch in the Wood River Valley, where research and restoration projects help land managers across the Intermountain West make informed decisions about how people live, work and recreate on rangelands. Dr. Parrella also made major improvements at the Nancy M. Cummings Research, Extension and Education Center in Salmon, and was instrumental in the kick-off of the Idaho Center for Agriculture Food and the Environment (CAFÉ). CAFÉ will be a leader in addressing constraints on water usage and environmental quality while supporting the agricultural sectors of dairy, livestock and cropland, as well as the processing industries. Dr. Parrella’s fingerprints are on many other projects that have come into existence while under his direction such as the Idaho Center for Plant and Soil Health in Parma; the Seed Potato Germplasm lab on the Moscow campus and the Agri Beef Meat Science and Innovation center. Dr. Parrella believes that what happens in agriculture revolves around relationships, and he has worked relentlessly to build those within the agricultural community. Dr. Parrella’s investment surpassed many for the passion and love he feels for our state, the people, the agriculture industry and for the future.

The Governor's Awards for Excellence in Agriculture are presented annually at Idaho Ag Summit.
