"Part of making the diplomacy work is what will be the consequences if the Iranians decide maybe not to listen to the rational demands of the world? You mentioned one, economic sanctions, but I am not going to comment on that, because I think it is very important for good negotiators to keep their cards close to the vest, and then at the appropriate time make it clear what our intentions are."

STORYLINE:
US President George W. Bush voiced optimism on Tuesday that diplomacy can yet persuade Iran to scrap its nuclear programme.
The president said diplomatic efforts were his "first choice" and that he thought they would work.
His comments came during an audience in Sun City, Florida, as US officials in New York discussed with fellow UN diplomats a possible Security Council resolution on Iran.
China and Russia have so far signalled they are cool to any vote threatening sanctions, but Bush dismissed reports of their positions as "guessing and speculating."
Bush said the world has a "common interest" in preventing the Iranian regime from obtaining nuclear weapons - especially given threats against Israel made by Iran''s president Mahmoud Ahmedinejad.
The International Atomic Energy Agency last week issued a report saying Iran had not complied with a U.N. Security Council call for it to abandon
uranium enrichment, which can be used to develop both nuclear fuel and nuclear weapons.
The Iranian president has asserted that his nation is only aiming to develop the technology for the production of nuclear energy.
