It was a tough five days for Wall Street, as U.S. markets on Friday slumped to their worst week since late May. The decline was primarily driven by a sharp sell-off on Friday, triggered by the resurgence of trade war concerns.

Heading into Friday, the benchmark S&P 500 (SP500) was actually positive for the week and was fresh off another record close, achieved on Wednesday. Market participants had largely shrugged off the continued U.S. government shutdown, and the lack of economic data had not appeared to faze traders. Precious metals grabbed the spotlight from equities, with spot gold #gld #gc_f surpassing the historic $4,000/oz level and spot silver #slv #si_f scaling the $50/oz mark for the first time ever.

However, on Friday, sentiment was rocked after President Donald Trump accused China of "hostile" export controls on rare earths and said the U.S. would impose an additional 100% tariff on products from the Asian nation. The S&P 500 #spx #es_f and the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 #ndx #nq_f posted their worst day since early April in response.

For the week, the S&P 500 slid -2.4%, while the Nasdaq 100 retreated -2.5%. The blue-chip Dow #dji cratered -2.7%.
