Abdominoplasty Hernia Repair

Описание к видео Abdominoplasty Hernia Repair

In this video, Dr. Bernard Beldholm, FRACS discusses how and why a hernia can be repaired as part of an abdominoplasty.

Abdominoplasty patients often want to remove loose skin and fat on the tummy after pregnancy or major weight loss. These same patients are at a higher risk for developing a hernia for the same reasons. Both pregnancy and obesity can weaken the abdominal muscles, leading to a hernia.

Fortunately, an abdominoplasty with hernia repair solves both problems in a single surgery. This is advantageous to the patient. Instead of having two separate procedures, they can combine both into one surgery, thereby reducing pain, time off work and surgical expenses.

There are many types of hernia. Two of the most common hernia types repaired during an abdominoplasty are epigastric hernia and umbilical hernia. Various other hernia types can also be treated during an abdominoplasty as well.

An abdominoplasty with hernia repair is possible because abdominoplasty exposes the abdominal cavity in such a way that it is easy to access the hernia and repair it. Stitches or mesh hernia repair may be performed.

Hernias don’t usually go away on their own. If you have a hernia and are also considering an abdominoplasty to remove hanging skin on the tummy, it is a good idea to combine procedures for best results.
