The Rattan Teng Pai was a common shield type employed by the armies of the Ming dynasty as it was cheap, light, flexible, and durable. It greatly outperformed the comparable wooden shields of it’s time because rattan has no wood grain, and will not split.The average size of a Ming dynasty rattan shield was roughly 32”-36”inches in diameter, it was
rounded not flat which allowed strikes to the shield to be deflected. These shields rarely featured metal embossing (although some exceptions did exist), unlike similar shields in Tibet and Southeast Asia. Although this taolu was titled “Tiger Head Shield” I did decide to paint the “Green Face Lion” on the front and give it a ferocious red mane. The shield after painting and the addition of the mane made it just over 5lbs in weight. After researching many other shield forms and the use of the shield I noticed that very few used it as an offensive weapon. I tried to show the shield in this video as both a defensive and offensive weapon. You can see where I strike with the flat surface and edges of the shield.
