Startup

As the ground crew clears the area, the pilot and co-pilot power on the advanced avionics systems, initializing the helicopter's AN/APS-153 radar and other mission-critical sensors. The twin General Electric T700 engines spool up, producing a distinct turbine whine that crescendos into a steady roar. The tail rotor begins spinning first, stabilizing the aircraft as the massive main rotor blades gradually gain momentum. Once at full speed, the rotors create a rhythmic "whoop-whoop" sound, accompanied by the powerful vibration typical of helicopters.

Close Taxi

With rotors spinning at full throttle, the MH-60R begins its slow, controlled taxi. The pilot delicately adjusts the collective and cyclic controls to maneuver the helicopter, ensuring it stays level while moving. The wide, flat skids scrape slightly against the tarmac as the helicopter inches forward, and the downwash from the rotors kicks up a visible wave of dust and debris around it. This close-up perspective reveals the intricate mechanics of the rotor system and the precision of the crew's coordination.

Takeoff

The MH-60R hovers briefly, its skids lifting just inches off the ground as the pilot checks stability.
