The Coed Murders Part 1
On the evening of January 18th 1970 two young coeds from West Virginia University, Mared Malarik and Karen Ferrell, took in a showing of the movie "Oliver" at the Metropolitan Theatre in Morgantown. Later that night after the film was over they left the theatre with two of their friends and walked gleefully two blocks north towards the nearest bus stop. Neither Mared nor Karen owned a car and got around the "college town" either mass transit or hitch-hiking. Sadly, on this night, they chose the latter.

At around 10:30pm Mared and Karen where apparently picked while hitch-hiking along Willey St, just a block away from the bus stop. Their two friends from the theatre observed them driven by in white car with a white male at the wheel. As it turned out their friends would be last ones to see Mared Malarik and Karen Ferrell.

After nearly 3 months of on-and-off searching their remains were found buried in a shallow grave roughly 12 miles south of Morgantown. The crime scene was particularly heinous as it quickly became apparent that each girl's head had been removed. An autopsy was unable to return a definite cause death. Law enforcement kicked their investigation into high gear, however, claims of political interference...some as high as the office of Governor Arch Moore...and ineptness would dog their efforts for the next 6 years.

Little to no progress was made until January of 1976 when an inmate in the Camden County, NJ Jail named Eugen Paul Clawson reportedly confessed to two other inmates that he was responsible for the girls' deaths. Clawson later confessed his guilt to members of the State Police on several occasions. However, in may of that year he pleaded 'not guilty' to two counts of first-degree murder, ensuing that he would eventually have his day...or days...in court. The Coed Murders Part 1.
