Commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana: The temple was commissioned in 1117 CE by King Vishnuvardhana of the Hoysala dynasty to commemorate his victory over the Cholas at Talakad.

Long Construction Period: The construction spanned over three generations and took an impressive 103 years to complete, reflecting the deep spiritual and political dedication of the Hoysala rulers.

Vaishnava Temple: The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in the form of Chennakeshava, which translates to "handsome Keshava." It has been an active Hindu temple and a pilgrimage site since its consecration.


A UNESCO World Heritage Site: Along with other Hoysala temples in the region, it has been recognized for its outstanding universal value and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hoysala Architecture: The temple is a prime example of the Hoysala architectural style, which is known for its detailed sculptures, intricate carvings, and star-shaped plans. It combines elements of both North Indian Nagara and South Indian Karnata styles.


Star-Shaped Plan: The temple stands on a wide platform (called a jagati) that follows a star-shaped plan, providing a circumambulatory path for devotees to walk around the sanctum and admire the detailed carvings.

Intricate Carvings: The temple's exterior and interior are a visual feast of carvings. The walls are adorned with friezes depicting scenes from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, as well as everyday life in the 12th century, including dancers, musicians, and animals.


Madanika Figures: A highlight of the temple is the series of 42 Madanika or Salabhanjika figures (celestial dancers or damsels) on the brackets and pillars. Each figure is a unique, exquisitely carved masterpiece, showcasing different dance poses and expressions.

Unique Pillars: The temple has 48 pillars inside the navaranga (hall), each one uniquely carved and highly polished. The most famous is the Narasimha Pillar, which is said to have been able to rotate on its base. The craftsmanship is so fine that some carvings on the pillars look like they were turned on a lathe.


Darpana Sundari: One of the most famous and stunning carvings is the "Darpana Sundari" (Lady with the Mirror), an elegant sculpture of a woman holding a mirror, known for its lifelike detail.

Hoysala Emblem: The Hoysala emblem, depicting a warrior slaying a lion, is prominently featured and is believed to symbolize King Vishnuvardhana's victory over the Cholas, whose emblem was a tiger/lion.
