Ambassador Robert LeBaron speaks to the Alabama World Affairs Council on 30 Sep 2025, on "Is Peace Possible in the Middle East?"

By chance, this was one day after Presidents Netanyahu and Trump held discussions in Washington DC and announced a comprehensive peace plan for Israel and the Palestinians, involving Arab countries as peace-keepers and to be overseen by President Trump and former Prime Minister Tony Blair.

He analyzed the modern history of regional agreements and the interests of nation states in the area. He cautioned that any peace agreement would be modified heavily by local actors.

He also pointed to a change in direction for the Trump administration, that had spoken of reducing US engagement abroad in favor of focussing the military on domestic peace-keeping.

He spoke of the virtues of US public service in a time of criticism and cutbacks.
