dMeta is a new file format allowing to attach metadata to digital assets of any kind for sharing know-how compilations. dMeta stands for data + metadata bundled together.
Embedded or attached metadata facilitates discovery and automatic classification of downloaded material in your personal knowledge base, thus making it easy to re-find it in the mass of material that accumulates over time.
A dMeta bundle usually contains a main file of any type plus all relevant metadata in an XMP sidecar file (format developed by Adobe and used in PDF documents).
For know-how transmission it can contain any number of attachments and links to remote resources.
For sharing know-how this could typically include a tutorial video plus related reading material and translations in the form of text prompts in other languages.
For scientific publication it could also contain referenced items and unstructured research data (as required by Open Access).
*The Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) is an ISO standard, originally created by Adobe Systems Inc., for the creation, processing and interchange of standardized and custom metadata for digital documents and data sets. Custom metadata can also include topics for searching by category.
