Please don’t try this at home!

What if I told you that the flowers in your garden might not just be beautiful, but edible too? At Rudding Park Hotel & Spa, head gardener Sarah Owen-Hughes took me into the kitchen garden to taste-test a selection of flowers, and I’ll admit, it was nothing short of eye opening.

Some flowers are delicate, subtle and refreshing, while others deliver a punch of unexpected flavour that completely redefines the way you look at them. There’s something magical about the idea that your garden border could also double as your larder, with plants doing double duty, delighting the eye and tantalising the taste buds.

But before you rush out with scissors and a salad bowl, let me give you a word of caution: not all flowers are edible, and some can be harmful. Please don’t try this at home unless you are absolutely certain you know what you’re eating.

In the video, Sarah guides me through the incredible variety of safe edible flowers, sharing how they’re used at Rudding Park in the restaurant and spa. It’s a wonderful reminder that a garden isn’t just about beauty or design - it can also be a rich, flavour-filled experience if you know where to look.

One thing’s for sure though: while many of the flowers were delicious, there was one I’ll never forget… for all the wrong reasons!
