Back in 1991, a 15-year-old Ryan Reynolds landed his first major role in the low-budget Canadian teen horror-comedy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze – wait, no – actually, it was the even more infamous straight-to-video slasher The Odyssey (1992 pilot-turned-series) and the short-lived teen soap Fifteen (also known as Hillside in Canada), but the real breaking point was his experience on the set of The Odyssey, where he felt so humiliated and out of place that he seriously considered quitting acting altogether.
In a rare 2025 interview with Vanity Fair (resurfaced in 2026 amid his massive Deadpool & Wolverine and upcoming projects buzz), Reynolds opened up about the dark early days: “I was 15, awkward, Canadian, and suddenly on this weird kids' adventure show where I felt like I didn’t belong. The director would scream at me in front of everyone, the other kids were cliquey, and I was so miserable I told my mom I was done with acting. I thought, ‘If this is what the industry is, I’m out.’”
