A three-phase motor's direction (forward/reverse) is controlled by interchanging any two of the three-phase power lines going to the motor. This is typically achieved using two magnetic contactors (often called the Forward and Reverse contactors), one for each direction, and a control circuit to manage their operation and ensure safety.
🛠️ Power Circuit Connection
The power circuit supplies the high-current three-phase power to the motor.
Forward Contactor: The three incoming lines (L1, L2, L3) are connected directly to the output terminals (T1, T2, T3) of the forward contactor.
Reverse Contactor: For the reverse contactor, the three incoming lines (L1, L2, L3) are connected to its output terminals with two phases switched. A common approach is:
L1 connects to T3 (Motor terminal).
L2 connects to T2 (Same motor terminal - this phase remains unchanged).
L3 connects to T1 (Motor terminal).
Motor Connection: The output terminals of both contactors are wired in parallel, and then connected to the motor's terminals (T1, T2, T3), usually through a single thermal overload relay for protection.
When the Forward Contactor is energized, L1-L2-L3 is applied as T1-T2-T3, and the motor runs in one direction. When the Reverse Contactor is energized, the phase sequence is effectively reversed (e.g., L3-L2-L1 is applied as T1-T2-T3), causing the motor to run in the opposite direction.
🔒 Control Circuit Connection and Interlocking
The control circuit uses auxiliary contacts, pushbuttons, and the contactor coils to safely control the motor.
Stop Button: A single Normally Closed (NC) pushbutton is used to stop the motor, wired in series with both contactor coils.
Start Buttons: Separate Normally Open (NO) pushbuttons are used for Forward and Reverse operation.
Latching/Holding Contacts: An NO auxiliary contact from each contactor (K-Forward and K-Reverse) is wired in parallel with its respective Start button to maintain the circuit and keep the contactor energized after the Start button is released.
Electrical Interlocking: This is crucial for safety. The NC auxiliary contact of the reverse contactor is wired in series with the coil of the forward contactor, and vice-versa. This ensures that if one contactor is energized, the coil of the other contactor is de-energized, preventing both from closing simultaneously which would cause a phase-to-phase short circuit (a "dead short").
