On the surface, the operation looked decisive. Speed, reach, overwhelming capability. At the tactical and even operational level, it worked. Few actors in the world could have executed something like this so quickly, or with such dominance.

But as Sally Paine lays out, that’s the wrong level to stop the analysis.

Military success only matters if it advances a strategic purpose. And what this episode exposes is how easily short-term effectiveness can corrode long-term power. History is littered with examples — Pearl Harbor, Vietnam — where operational brilliance produced strategic failure. The lesson is consistent: winning battles does not mean winning outcomes.

What this move risks is not just backlash in Venezuela, but a deeper alienation across Latin America. When the United States demonstrates that rules are optional when inconvenient, others absorb the lesson. Not rhetorically — operationally. Norms erode, restraint disappears, and imitation follows.

The danger is cumulative. Once the rules-based order starts to fray, no actor controls how far it unravels. What feels like strength in isolation becomes vulnerability in aggregate. The system becomes less predictable, alliances less stable, and deterrence less credible.

And there’s a final, uncomfortable implication. If this logic extends — to Cuba, to Greenland, or elsewhere — it doesn’t just weaken America’s standing. It threatens the cohesion of the Western alliance itself.

The real cost, then, isn’t this operation. It’s what it makes inevitable next.
