Meet Nate Craig-Myers: Auburn's star freshman receiver

Meeting Nate Craig-Myers and getting to put together this video feature awas one of those experiences that reminds me of why I’m fortunate to have that job that I do.

Here’s a talented wide receiver who is less focused on being the center of attention and more concerned with how he can help those he cares about; a young man whose goal is to earn a degree in business management so he can open a free child daycare center in his hometown.

A telling moment from my time with Nate came as we were nearing the end of the day. We shot the actual interview in Tampa Catholic's football locker room, and as I was packing up I noticed that one of the lockers was different than the others; larger and in a prime location.

“Hey Nate, what’s that locker for?”

“Oh, that’s the one they give as a reward to one of the seniors.”

“Was it yours?”

“Yeah … but I only used it once and then gave it to someone else. I’m not a fan of standing out like that.”

I had to admit I was surprised when I heard that. I can’t think of many adults, let alone high school kids, who would turn down something that they had rightfully earned because it made them feel less a part of a team.

I finished packing and we started to walk out towards the football field - a field where Nate made countless highlight plays during his remarkable high school career.

“Well”, I asked “what about after you do something huge on the field. Do you still hate being the center of attention then?”

He thought on that question for a moment before answering, a big smile appearing on his face

“Well…I guess you can’t really help it at that point.”
