Margam Park And The Glamorgan Ridgeway - ‘MUST DO’ Walks In Wales

Have you visited Margam Park lately? Exploring Margam Abbey ruins, Margam Castle and walking the Glamorgan Ridgeway.

If you haven’t visited Margam Country Park in South Wales or haven’t been for a long time it is worth taking a trip. Margam Park is only a couple of minutes from the M4 and the steelworks of Port Talbot but it could be a million miles away.

In the park lies the Margam Abbey ruins and Margam Castle and there are a number of walks and mountain bike paths.

Margam Abbey was a Cistercian Abbey founded in 1147 and became quite powerful. Only part of the church, the ruined chapter house and a few fragments of neighbouring buildings now survive.

Margam Castle is a Victorian Gothic Revival Style Country House built in the 1830s for the Talbot family after which the neighbouring town of Port Talbot is named.

From the park, there is as a steep walk up to the top of Margam Mountain to join the Glamorgan Ridgeway path which stretches across beautiful South Wales as far as Caerphilly.

Along the ridgeway, there are many prehistoric sites and in the short distance, I walked from Margam I came across four of them, Mynydd y Castell Camp, the Danish Camp, Camp North of Tonmawr and the Roman Camp.

So if you are looking for somewhere new to visit, give Margam Park Neath Port Talbot a try.
