With an Opening Monologue That Addresses His Controversial Past, Shane Gillis Returns to Saturday Night Live
Returning to his role as host of Saturday Night Live (SNL), comedian Shane Gillis used his opening monologue to confront his contentious history. Gillis, who was let off from SNL in 2019 for using homophobic and racial insults on a podcast, made a lighthearted reference to his prior firing and asked viewers not to look it up.
I've arrived. The vast majority of you likely don't know my name. The truth is that I was let go from this show quite some time ago. However, I implore you not to look that up. Do not search for my name on Google if you are unaware of who I am. It's alright. It's not even worth worrying about," Gillis joked at the beginning of his roughly eight-minute tirade.
In his subsequent family anecdotes, the comic poked fun at his sister's decision to marry an Arab from Egypt and foster three Black children. Visiting their place was like "getting into the craziest Uber Pool you've ever been in," he said.
But Gillis wasn't bashful about making fun of her family's Down syndrome; she said that her relatives with the condition are "doing better than everybody I know" and "are the only ones having a pretty good time consistently." Gillis made fun of the studio's artificial lighting and the audience's lacklustre reaction after the comic brought up his niece's Down syndrome.
Some viewers were uneasy about Shane Gillis's return to SNL, while others attacked what they saw as a lack of humor in his speech. Overcoming the controversy, Gillis has become more prominent thanks to her two hit Netflix specials, "Live In Austin" and "Beautiful Dogs," and her frequent appearances on Joe Rogan's podcast, "The Joe Rogan Experience."
