Vilsevind - Törnetaggsnår - Swedish folk music

"The Prickly Bush" is the story of a maiden who is about to be hanged for unknown reasons. She pleads with the hangman to wait for the arrival of someone who may buy her freedom. First arrives her father and then comes her brother, but they have only come to see her hanged. Will her true love save her?

This is a song that cannot be ascribed to any particular tradition but that rather belongs to many cultures. While there are many versions (The Maid freed from the Gallows, among others), all recount a similar story. Den Bortsålda (TSB D 391) is perhaps one of the best well-known pieces in the Swedish Medieval Ballads corpus, thanks to the popularity of Swedish folk act Garmarna, who perform it. As we love this ballad and we also like other versions of this theme by Led Zeppelin, Leadbelly, Willie Watson, The Watersons, Steeleye Span and many others, we wanted to create our own version incorporating elements from Scandinavian and British tradition. This song started by inspiration of our admired Spiers & Boden, one of the best English folk duos out there, and somewhere along the way it took new life, thanks to added Scandinavian spices! But Scotland is also present in the form of a little melodic passage, based on Malinky’s “Billy Taylor”. A true North sea – Baltic sea crossover!
