When Showtime announced Ray Donovan would end after 7 seasons (on a cliffhanger), viewers were devastated. Ray Donovan was always more than just an entertaining show about a Hollywood fixer. After 7 years, it had become one of television’s most sophisticated, detailed and unflinchingly honest studies of the effects of childhood/interpersonal trauma & sexual abuse. Liev Schreiber’s subtle, layered performance of the deeply traumatised title character earned him multiple award nominations, and the supporting cast were all equally extraordinary.

So, I wanted to make a Ray character study/tribute that highlighted the stellar work the show did in portraying the legacy of unaddressed trauma. Whether it was emotional, physical or sexual abuse, parental neglect & mistreatment, addiction, mental illness or suicide – Ray Donovan explored it all with a sensitivity and accuracy rarely seen on television. For this reason, and so many others, the show & these characters absolutely deserve a proper ending, and I truly hope Showtime can make that happen.
