This video is part of a series of studies of Greater Sudbury and the Sudbury Basin done by first-year students in the School of Architecture at Laurentian University in Sudbury. Six sections studied different aspects of the region (from geological and ecological systems, to habitat diversity and mining histories). This section, led by Assistant Professor David Fortin, were tasked with "mapping" the oral histories of the area to consider how they impact the way we understand the places we inhabit. Student work was inspired by field trips to see pictographs near Espanola and to Dreamer's Rock, along with stories told to students by Isaac Day, Tim McGregor, Hilda Nadjiwan, and Jerry Otowadjiwon. The animations try to capture the mythical and ephemeral aspects of storytelling while emphasizing their importance in better understanding the complex physical and non-physical contributions to how one understands "place".
