What if Shigeru Miyamoto decided to maintain the standard Super Mario Bros. 1 style during the development of the third game?

It's worth remembering that the first two SMB games (2 in the JP version) used the same style. Just with some different and more difficult extras. SMB3 would have this direction until they decided to completely change the art style and game style. Only the sound effects remained. In this video I show the adaptation of Super Mario Bros 3 if it had been made in the style of the first two games. I just forgot to show you how to go to Toad's house that offers items. But next time I'll show you.

This animation had been paused for a long time. Post SMA5 and before Super Mario Wonderland. The last level I showed was the one I stopped at. I don't intend to continue. If there's a part 2, it's just showing Mario dressed as a tanooki or a raccoon.

Why didn't he appear like that?
Firstly, I thought about leaving the game as another different version of SMB and SMB2JP, just with the fire flower and the poison mushroom. And that's also why I didn't make Mario's sprites like that.

But if I do it in the future, Mario will have the sound you hear during the magic wand. The sound of using the tanooki to fall slowly, which I would use, would be the same sound effect as when Birdo throws eggs in the American SMB2.

About development
I started doing SMB3 in this style with just a title screen without the giant block, with the name "Super" centered and checkered blocks on the floor. Same as the original. The fonts were the same as shown there and Mario's blue palette was darker.

Soon after, I started thinking... "SMB2 JP, Mario is in a castle during the title screen... but there will be small castles in Mario 3 just for levels, and the big ones are for the kings..." what I I did? I took a Toad's house and added a blue version. This blue one is just for entry.

Why in the first levels before the castle did you also leave a Toad house?
One reason is because Mario starts SMB2JP in a castle. The second is that at some point I would do that secret fireworks trick so that Toad's house would offer items instead of fireworks. And in place of these fireworks, the mushroom flag would also appear at the top, symbolizing the bonus warning.

But I changed my mind and left it for the card game. (not yet programmed) and the Toads' houses with items became secret exits after flags. At some level there would be another flag further ahead with a Toad house with a Toad next to it, and a small mushroom on the ball at the top of the flag.

When Mario enters the flag that should be a star, is the mushroom one I mentioned above. And in the minigame, the scenery is similar to that seen in the original SMB3 but using tiles from the haunted house from SMB1 in Super Mario Maker and a background inside the house that is all blue. With that unused block from a minigame not used in the original SMB3. And in this block a roulette showing the items. By pressing A, it stops and you win the prize. The background music is from the game VS. Pinball (main level theme). Unfortunately I forgot to add this excerpt to the video but I recorded another excerpt that I will leave here in the description in unlisted mode:

This is my special anniversary video for the iconic and epic Super Mario Brothers 3 on Famicom/NES, which today is celebrating 35 years since its release in Japan. Hope you like it!

This was a fictional non-profit work. Made in homage to the Super Mario Bros. games. in a way that reimagines the classic in another style. I wonder what Super Mario Bros. would be like. Wonder in the style of SMB1? Soon I will do the same with SMB Wonder, but in a much more simplified way than this video. (There are already 3 worlds made in just one week. Who knows, maybe I'll release a demo in the future too? But as for SMB3, I don't know yet)
