Battlefield 2042 is a 2021 first-person shooter game developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts, serving as the seventeenth instalment in the Battlefield series. It was released on November 19, 2021, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
Unlike previous entries, it is solely multiplayer-focused and does not feature a single-player campaign, marking a significant shift in the franchise's direction. The game is set in a near-future world in 2042, following a Kessler syndrome event in 2040 that caused the destruction of 70% of orbiting satellites, leading to a permanent global blackout and escalating tensions between the United States and Russia, culminating in war. The story is conveyed through the multiplayer experience and the characters of the game's specialists, rather than a traditional narrative.
The game features a revamped class system centred around "Specialists," each belonging to one of the traditional Battlefield roles—Assault, Engineer, Medic, or Recon—but with unique skills and gadgets, allowing players to customize their loadouts extensively. Players can control futuristic weapons, deployable turrets, drones, and vehicles, with the ability to request vehicle air-drops. The game supports three main multiplayer modes: "All-Out Warfare," which includes the Conquest and Breakthrough modes; "Hazard Zone," a cooperative survival mode where teams compete to retrieve data drives from satellite debris; and "Battlefield Portal," a community-driven platform for creating custom game modes using maps and mechanics from past Battlefield titles.
Battlefield 2042 was the final Battlefield game released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. It introduced support for cross-platform play, allowing players on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S to play together, although the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions were limited to cross-play only between those two platforms. The PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S versions support matches with up to 128 players, while the older platforms are capped at 64 players. The game received mixed reviews from critics and a negative reception from players, primarily due to technical issues, a lack of features, and controversial gameplay changes. Despite these challenges, it has continued to receive updates, including new specialists, maps, and weapons, through a seasonal content system.
A new instalment, Battlefield 6, is in development and co-developed by DICE, Motive Studios, Ripple Effect Studios, and Criterion Games, with a planned release date of October 10, 2025.
