After weeks of hot summer weather, the Pacific Northwest finally delivered the conditions every bass angler dreams about — cloudy skies, steady rain, and a cool breeze. I thought it was going to be the perfect day to catch some giant PNW largemouth bass. I launched the kayak loaded with big baits: a Spro Bronzeye 90 frog, a Citizen 7 swimbait, and a topwater walking bait, ready to hunt trophy largemouth in one of Washington’s most promising big-bass lakes. I even broke out the drysuit for this trip, convinced the bite would be on fire.

But this “perfect” setup didn’t go as planned. Instead of big bass blowing up on my giant baits, I had to grind for a few fish — a couple of dinks on the dropshot and one on a spinnerbait. This lake is known for producing giant largemouth bass in Washington, but on this day, the giants just weren’t having it.
