Borderless Music & Arts Festival 2021 presents: Shahrazi. Live from the Gordon Best Theatre. Peterborough, ON, Canada (Nogojiwanong, Treaty 20). This video contains Shahrazi's live performances as well as 2 self-produced music videos. Shahrazi writes and sings original songs as she plays the daf (an Iranian frame drum), guitar, keyboard, loop pedal, and produces electronic beats. Each song in this performance is a demo in progress as they learn to record their own music at home. The music videos feature Shahrazi's daily pandemic art & trauma healing process while she explores solo music production, surreal performance art, and sword bellydancing.
Track order:
"hidden histories" (live)
"reachin' in the dark" (live)
"man's rage" (live)
"shah" vocal loop intro & sword bellydance outtakes
daf drum solo
"dark night of the soul" (music video/demo)
"followed by night" (music video/demo)
"(sub)merged in love" (spoken word poem)
Shahrazi (she/they) is a multidisciplinary artist, musician, performer, and cross cultural community-builder. Born to a family of migrants who came to Canada as refugees from Iran and Poland, she has found herself in the middle of a larger moving picture.
Shahrazi uses art to express and explore themes of gender, culture, self, home, nature, spirituality, freedoms, dreams, borders, traumas, destruction, migration, change, creation, and growth. Their work explores the tension that distance and diaspora creates in our lives and how it leads us to journey to a new world of understanding of ourselves.
Here is a sneak peek of what Shahrazi has been working on and experimenting with in her attic throughout the pandemic... Stay tuned for the next instalment of their Borderless 2021 performance! Until then, follow them on Instagram for more regular updates: / shahrazi.music

Shahrazi; somewhere in between the earth and the stars, she explores themes of diaspora, spirit, love, war, and rebirth. Dreamy, soulful sounds from the woods to the water to the moon and back, sinking all the way to your core (and pulling out subconscious moods and roots). You will be happy, filled with euphoric giddiness, you will dive, be challenged, you will dance and your heart will sing.
Their upcoming EP, Journey to Shahraz, mixes elements of nature, improv, the spirit of jazz and punk infused with rock, middle eastern tones, velvety vocals drenched in poetry, eastern folk fusion, surreal soul, psychic rhythms, offbeat grooves, and sensual dreamy drone dances….

Peterborough-Nogojiwanong is a meeting place and it is known for being a beautifully welcoming community with character. Borderless Records is dedicated to honouring these roots while empowering marginalized artists and bringing different groups of people together to share space, expand worlds, and celebrate the magic that this city brings to us.
We are Borderless. We are an electrifying gathering of artists who are predominantly women, people of colour, LGBTQ2+, Black, Indigenous, people from mixed backgrounds, multi-faiths, different ages and all walks of life. Borderless artists do not limit themselves to the expectations of genre, gender, or where they come from; we invite different communities to share space, to feel seen and heard, to feel united in warmth instead of sameness. We are storytellers and culture creators who express diverse perspectives through art and infuse the community with their spirit. We want people to find joy outside the box.
Borderless Music & Arts Festival is a multidisciplinary arts showcase that centres women, queer, BIPOC, intersectional identities, and inclusive community-building with an eclectic mosaic of music, dance, visual art, poetry, drag, puppetry, comedy, circus, and film.
This festival project continues our mission to bridge cultural borders, infuse the city with the beauty of its own diversity, empower people through art, share experiences, and create shared space even in the middle of a pandemic.
For over 4 years, Borderless and its year-round programming has brought an amazing wealth of diversity, culture, collaboration, innovation, and excitement to Peterborough - Nogojiwanong. Although we cannot celebrate shared space in the way we usually would, we invite you to join us in the virtual plane! We are so grateful for the support of the Electric City Culture Council, OPIRG, and DBIA Peterborough so that we can all bring you a free virtual broadcast of the festival this summer.
