This new scanning mode allows you to create photorealistic 3D scenes with just your smartphone. Suitable for everything from small objects to large buildings, splats deliver an unprecedented level of detail with accurate lighting and reflections. In addition, splatting reconstructs geometry far out into the distance, allowing your scans to become truly immersive experiences.

Unlike meshes, splats are powerful enough to represent transparency, reflections, and view-dependent lighting. Shiny objects, specular reflections, and subsurface scattering that would be impossible to model in a textured mesh can be easily handled by splats.

Since splat parameters are learned (i.e. trained with gradient descent just like a neural network), they can adapt to many different types of scenes, regardless of scale, materials, or level of detail. The end result is a model so realistic that you might mistake renderings for a video.
