Shifting the Flood Paradigm | Virginia Smith | TEDxVillanovaU

Описание к видео Shifting the Flood Paradigm | Virginia Smith | TEDxVillanovaU

Recent urban growth around the world has led to degradation of natural water systems, resulting in disasters including flooding, environmental contamination, and water security stress. Leveraging advancements in data collection and computational technology, society has the potential to bridge traditionally siloed fields to produce more effective and sustainable engineering solutions for urban flooding and water security. You won't want to miss Dr. Virginia Smith's captivating talk on why water resource planning is fundamental for a more sustainable world, how her cutting edge research is addressing growing global flood crises, and what you can do to help shift the flood paradigm. Dr. Virginia Smith is an Assistant Professor of water resources in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Villanova University. Her research focuses on water in the urban landscape. She is particularly interested in rivers, flooding, sediment transport, and green storm water infrastructure solutions. Virginia joined Villanova from a career in international development, and she continues to work on projects in the United States and abroad. She is the winner of the 2020 Early Career Award for Applied Research from the Universities Council on Water Resources (UCOWR) and the 2021 recipient of Villanova's College of Engineering Excellence in Teaching Award. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
