STORYLINE

Israeli troops on Friday began the third day of forced evictions, pushing through a barricade of flaming cars to enter the small Jewish settlement of Gadid in Gush Katif at sunrise.

About two thousand forces were mobilised to expel what was believed to be just a few remaining families, along with about 60 extremist hardliners.

Troops gathered at the entrance of Gadid where commanders tried to negotiate a peaceful departure.

In what has become a familiar scene this week, settlers had set alight makeshift barricades to block the soldiers, but a military bulldozer pushed through the blockade and cleared a path for soldiers to enter.

Troops were forced to halt when they encountered two more flaming roadblocks, which sent a plume of black smoke over the settlement.

Eventually, forces began clearing out a synagogue, carrying people out by their arms and legs.

Unlike a larger standoff the previous day, protesters did not resist with force, but rather allowed themselves to be carried away.

About 50 people, mostly youths from the West Bank, were believed to be inside the synagogue.

Meanwhile, in the settlement of Neve Dekalim, scene of violent protests on Thursday, quiet descended upon the streets on Friday.

Security officers were making preparations to start demolishing homes in the area.

''We are going to collect the property from Sunday, ongoing. As you can see this beautiful city, it will all be vanished, '' said Division Commander Gershon Hacohen.

A few rubbish bins were alight on the streets, but few settlers were to be seen.
