STORYLINE:
Chilean high school students ratcheted up their offensive on Monday, with university students and unions joining their calls for increased spending and a role in reforming Chile's education system.
Police used water trucks and tear gas to disperse around one thousand protesters attempting to march to central Santiago and barricade one of the capital's central boulevards with burning tyres.
Protesters responded by hurling rocks at police vehicles.
Chile's public schools have been paralysed for three weeks by students demanding far-reaching reforms to the country's educational system.
The are calling for financial breaks for poor students and federal intervention to balance out regional differences in educational spending.
On Monday the Education Ministry was shut down as bureaucrats there joined the protest.
President Michelle Bachelet appeared to have defused the crisis last Thursday when she offered students a variety of benefits that would cost Chile some 200 (m) million US dollars.
But students said Bachelet's concessions were not enough, saying they now wanted to participate in drafting the education-system reforms announced by the president.
The initial government concessions came after violent street protests last week left some 20 people injured, more than 700 arrested and millions of dollars of property damage.
