French physicist M. Leon Thevenin, 1883

In practical life, in a circuit load element is variable while other elements are fixed.

Each time the load is changed, the entire circuit has to be analyzed all over again and again. (problem)

To avoid this problem, Thevenin’s theorem provides a technique by which the fixed part of the circuit is replaced by an equivalent circuit.

A linear two-terminal circuit can be replaced by an equivalent circuit consisting of a voltage source VTh in series with a resistor RTh,

where VTh is the open-circuit voltage at the load terminals and

RTh is the equivalent resistance at the load terminals when all the independent sources are reduced to zero.

Our major concern is to find the Vth and Rth. (Thevenin's equivalent circuit parameters )

VTh = open-circuit voltage at the load terminals and

RTh = equivalent resistance at the load terminals when all the independent sources are reduced to zero.

Type of questions

Type 1: Find the Thevenin equivalent circuit of the circuit shown in Fig.

Type 2: Determine the current through X-Ω resistance in the circuit shown in Fig. using Thevenin’s theorem.
