May 11, 1945. Near Dingalan Bay on Luzon, McKinney of Company A, 123rd Infantry Regiment, was resting in his tent when a Japanese sergeant slashed through the flap and struck him with a sword, severing part of his ear. Reacting instantly, McKinney grabbed his M1 rifle and killed the attacker with the butt of the weapon.

Then he saw them — scores of Japanese soldiers breaching the perimeter.

Every instinct said run. Every rule said wait for reinforcements.

McKinney did neither.

What the sharecropper’s son from Georgia relied on that morning wasn’t just military training. It was survival instinct sharpened by years of hunting — patience, movement, accuracy under pressure.
