🇬🇷 Greece Food Tour - 2 | 😋 Tasting Authentic and Contemporary Greek Cuisine in Athens

We started our Greece food tour with two breakfasts. The first breakfast was at Happy Hippo, a small bohemian café which serves brunch, good cofffee and drinks. A small diner style café it spills over to the pavement where we decided to have our breakfast. We ordered a scrambled egg and avacado on toast with a flat white. The bread which was toasted was smeared with avacado paste topped with fluffy and piping hot scrambled eggs. Served with a side of lettuce, this breakfast was perfect. But, we were still hungry. So, we headed for a second breakfast.

Bread Factory in Siggrou is a food outlet serving bakery items as well as tradtional Greek dishes round the clock. We found lots of locals dining in this eating joint. We found that the food is baked / cooked in batches and served fresh. For the breakfast, we chose a freshly made Brioche Sandwich, which was stuffed with smoked turkey slices, cheesem tomato and lettuce. The bun was buttery and fluffy and the sandwich – probably the best one I had during our trip to Greece.

We hopped on to a tram and reached Syntagma square. We walked around Ermou Street for a while, listened to the bands performing and then headed to Zisis Fis in The Cone restaurant. The restaurant was fairly crowded and decided to have only one dish – fried squid. The squid was perfectly fried with just salt and white pepper. A squeeze of lime, the squid was the best one I ever had during this trip. Zisis opened only in 2017, and the resturant closes early in the evening.

Our lunch was at Bairaktaris Central near Mitropoeos Cathedral of Athens. This taverna was established in 1879 and they serve tradional Greek cuisne with fresh ingredients at affordable rates. With live music and good food, the taverna is always busy with tourists as well as locals. We ordered couple of beers and tasted two of they dishes. Stuffed Pepper with Feta Cheese and Lamb Doner.
