This month marks my 8-year anniversary of quitting the benzodiazepine medication Xanax, which I was prescribed (along with the SSRI Paxil) for anxiety. For many years, I lived with the belief that I couldn't survive without the medications. I lived with the belief that I had disorders that could only be kept at bay by prescriptions.

But I was determined to prove those ideas wrong. In my mid-thirties, I quit Paxil and Xanax, and after surviving SSRI withdrawal and benzo withdrawal, I kept moving forward, finding a better life that wasn't controlled by "disorder" labels or medications.
