After getting a coffee at McDonald's in Wilkes-Barre just off of the Plains/Wilkes-Barre border, I glanced over at the former Prospect Colliery's once huge culm pile which was its waste pile for what was pulled out of the mine. Whatever the breaker deemed unusable for market was dumped in this pile. Everything from old timbers to dead mules was additionally dumped along with the large amounts of shale. Most of these huge waste rock/coal piles have been reclaimed, where the coal is separated and burned while the unburnable rock is sent off for road fill, etc. Not many of these piles exist in the modern era. This massive culm pile was split in 2 by the construction of the Cross Valley Expressway in the early to mid 1980s. The north side of the culm pile towered over 200 feet in height and took up over 100 acres. This was slowly and methodically reclaimed in the 1990s. For whatever reason, this section of culm pile in my video was not reclaimed. Nature however did the reclaiming, and it is now teeming with all species of trees. I just figured it was an interesting observation. A testament to time itself and nature. Hopefully it is not "formally reclaimed" where they will cut all of the trees down, haul off the black mountain and make it a field. In my eyes, that then becomes redundant & utterly pointless.
