A scenic drive through Liechtenstein reveals the alpine charm and cultural heritage of this small European principality. Starting in Balzers, the route climbs through the Rhine Valley, where vineyards blanket the hillsides and Gutenberg Castle rises dramatically from its rocky perch. From there, the drive ascends through Triesenberg, a hillside village offering panoramic views over the valley and toward the rugged Three Sisters ridge that marks the Austrian border.
Continuing north along Route 11, the road enters Vaduz, Liechtenstein’s capital. Here, the silhouette of Vaduz Castle overlooks the town and the Rhine, standing as a national symbol—even if the castle itself is closed to visitors. As the route heads toward the north of the country, drivers pass through Schaan and onward to Schellenberg, where the medieval ruins of Untere Burg and Obere Burg rest quietly among forested slopes.
This compact journey—roughly 30 kilometers—combines vineyard-draped valleys, mountain villages, historic castles, and alpine outlooks. It’s an ideal route for travelers looking to experience Liechtenstein’s full range of natural and historical beauty in a single short road trip.
