When your budget says you need to divide a remodel into phases, how do you know where to begin? You might decide to do a small room first to gain confidence in your remodel skills. Or you could rip the bandaid off and do your most urgently needed space first!

The right order (and scale) of phase one is not one size fits all, though. It will depend on your available budget, your tolerance for living with disruption and even the life stage of your family.

The one thing you must NOT do is take on any project (from a small bath upgrade or a whole house siding replacement) before you’ve done some Mid-Century Master Plan Thinking!

For mid-century homeowners, we always need the reinforcement of a master plan process (even a mini one) to push back against the tide of default remodel choices that wipe out mcm charm.

And if you take the “eat your veggies first” approach to a remodel and just knock out all of your inspection check list to do items first … you’ll end up limiting the options you have for cool 2-for-1 design improvements to make once you start working on your dream update!
