Citizen Lab is known worldwide for its investigations into Pegasus, spyware sold by the Israel-based NSO Group, which was proven to have been used by various states to hack the devices of world leaders and global civil society activists. In conversation with IWM Rector MISHA GLENNY, Citizen Lab director RONALD DEIBERT looked into the workings of a growing mercenary surveillance industry and the abuses that governments commit by targeting human rights defenders, journalists, opposition members, lawyers and others in dozens of countries.

Ronald J. Deibert is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, University of Toronto. The Citizen Lab undertakes interdisciplinary research at the intersection of global security, ICTs, and human rights.
